  • The International Festival of Cinema of Tetouan organizes a colloquium on the theme of the borders in the Mediterranean Cinema

The IFMCT organizes, at the occasion of its 23rd edition which is taking place from March 25th to April 1st,2017, a colloquium on the “The representation of the borders in the Mediterranean cinema”

Well renowned critics and searchers will participate in this colloquium: The French critic François Jost, the Lebanese searcher and author Rachid El-Daïf, the Palestinan writer Liana Badr, the French searcher Jean Cled, the Egyptian critic Amir Amry and the Italian writer and journalist Patricia Fiorentino.

Those participants will analyze, in the basis of Spanish, French and Italian productions, several axes such as « The borders and the illegal immigration”, “the image of the immigrant in the European cinema”. “Borders and conflicts” and “The borders in the Palestinian cinema” will be discussed.

The responsibles of the festival consider that the question of the borders is a recurrent theme in many movies, narratives and epics…And just one century ago, whoever could freely move between countries without the need of any visa nor for a favorable opinion from the civil servants of a country.

Nowadays, new borders are born, strengthened by barbed wires, new dividing walls are built on the two shores of the Mediterranean. The Mare nostrum was bygone days a space of exchange and cohabitation. It became now a common grave for thousands of north Africans and African fleeing misery in their countries.

In the Mediterranean filmography of the north and the south, we find then numerous representations of the theme of the journey, whether it is a journey for a better life (Immigration) or an adventurous journey. Characters persisting to realize their dreams and to regain their confiscated dignity…Followed by repetitive dramas and tragedies.

The objective of this colloquium, in which filmmakers, intellectuals, writers and professionals of the 7th art will participate, is to differently approach, through the cinematographic language, the theme of the borders and the attempt to cross them.

It will be the occasion to shed light on the division between the artistic expressions. Cinema and literature, documentaries and fiction cinema…Fortunately, as people try to hide behind walls, art continues to create bridges and links between them.

What is the approach that filmmakers accord to the question of the borders, through the image, the sound, the space and the characters? Why do not the voice and the work of the filmmakers reach out the decision-makers? What are the types of borders that are recurrent in the Mediterranean cinema?

Since its very first editions in the eighties, the Festival of Cinema of Tetouan, first Moroccan international festival, has given prominent display to colloquiums, seminars, round-tables and conferences. It is now part of its tradition to encourage the exchanges and to privilege the dialogues, now interrupted between the populations of the two shores of the Mediterranean.

  • The Chinese Cinema is to be honored during the 23rd edition of the International Festival of the Mediterranean Cinema of Tétouan.

The Chinese Cinema is to be honored during the 23rd edition of the International Festival of the Mediterranean Cinema of Tétouan. This special event reflects the solid ties that link the Regional Council of Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima and the Republic of China that has recently launched very promising economic, logistic and scientific projects in the region.

Hence, the section dedicated to the Chinese cinema will be one of the highlights of this 23rd edition of the IFMCT, which will take place from March,25th to April,2nd 2017. The regional council of Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima, who pledged full support for the festival, made agreement with China whose investments are bringing real growth opportunities for the region.

In accordance with this cooperation, this session will be a real occasion for the cinephiles to discover the Chinese Cinema, all genres included, which started since 1896 and is incredibly booming nowadays.

Historically, the Dingjun mountain (Dingjun Shan, on 1905) is the movie that marks the beginning of the first generation which goes until 1932, year of the bombardment of Shanghai by the Japanese army destroying numerous film installations. In the 1930th, the Chinese cinema reaches a remarkable level of creativity, leaded by the second generation of the Chinese filmmakers: the writer-filmmaker Sun Yu, educated in the United States and the communist screenwriter Xia Yan, trained in Japan. The dominant themes were the women rights, the social inequality or the national exaltation. Street angels (Malu Tianshi, 1937), sketch of the life, of the love and of the social injustice of the shallows of Shanghai, might be considered as representative film of this period.

The establishment of the popular republic, in 1949, was a major turning point for the 7th art. A popular cinema is born, intended for the vast isolated regions of the hinterland. Most of the films try to ensure an ideological education, as well as to promote movements and information campaigns. Shortly after 1949, the importations of the foreign films were limited to the other communist countries. 600 films were produced between 1949 and 1966, at the beginning of the cultural revolution when filmographic activities were forbidden for 6 years. From 1966 till 1947, period of the cultural revolution, the Chinese cinematography fell into disuse.  No more films shall be produced except some revolutionary operas and full-length films. Also, foreign films from Albania, North Korea, USSR, France (The old fun) were very admired by the Chinese in this period.

New generations come to light after the national symposium of cinema, in 1984 in Beijing. Studios were allowed to project, themselves, their productions without the need of the state entities’ permission. The key word is that the quality outweighs the strict policy. From there, many Chinese filmmakers made their way into the international scene: Li Yang born in 1959, for his Blind shaft (2003), Wang Chao, born in 1964, for Fantasia (2014), Lou Ye, born in 1965, for Spring fever (2009) or Mystery (2012) and especially Wang Bing, born in 1967, for West of the tracks (2002) or Three sisters (2012), DiaoYinan, born in  1969, for Black Coal (2014) et Jia Zhang-ke, born1970, for The world (2004), Still life (2006), I wish I knew (2010). And among the youngest we notice a woman, Li yu, born in 1973 for Buddha mountain (2004). We shall remind that in 2015, Kaili Blues were the first full-length film that wins the best emergent director prize, a special mention from the jury of the festival of Locarno and the Montgolfière d’or in the festival of the 3 continents in Nantes.

It will be therefore a big opportunity for the public to discover and to enjoy the different faces of the Chinese cinematographic creations.
